History of the Herpetarium
I first started the Herpetarium 1997, when I brought my snake cage to camp to keep snakes and lizards in. This was when we went to second session. We were in teachers' cabin #6 (the "Billy the Kid Cabin"), and I kept the snake cages and aquariums on the front porch. This was convenient, because campers could come over and see the Herpetarium during Trading Post time. Ryan Reed (another teacher's kid) and I really enjoyed catching snakes and lizards around camp and keeping them at the Herpetarium.

I continued doing it until 2000, which was the year I became a camper. After 2000, I quit doing the Herpetarium. It was too hard since I was a camper and couldn't take care of the herps all the time. However, in 2003 (fourth session) I started the Herpetarium back up again. My dad and the boys' 5th and 6th grade class helped with it, and it worked great. Although it was no longer in the same place (my parents were in a different cabin then), I was able to keep the cages under the deck of their cabin.

Since then, I have continued to do the Herpetarium. The last few years I have kept the cages under a trailer, and brought them out at Trading Post time.

One fun thing we used to do was the Snake and Lizard Show. It was inspired by livestock shows, but instead of sheep, goats, etc. we had snakes, lizards, and salamanders. I made log plaques and paper ribbons as prizes, and the campers showed the different herps that they'd caught. There were two SLS's, one each week. There was one category that I called "Snakemanship." We had someone else as the judge, and the judge made up questions about herps for Snakemanship. I always won that award!
